This book discusses the design, performance and implementation of access protocols with emphasis on how such protocols can efficiently support disparate classes of multimedia traffic. These protocols are deployed or experimented in various broadband wireless environments such as wireless ATM, satellite networks, mobile cellular and personal communication systems, wireless local loops, wireless local area networks, and others. Besides a comprehensive introduction and survey to the evolution of access protocols, some of the hottest topics of current interest are covered. These include:

Connection control and QoS provisioning.
Traffic load balancing techniques.
Developments in advanced CDMA/TDMA/OFDM systems.
International standardization efforts (e.g., 3G, IMT 2000).
Emerging broadband wireless access (e.g., wireless ATM, satellite ATM, high-speed wireless LANs).
The complete design, performance analysis, simulation and protocol verification of a generalized broadband multiple access protocol.
While engineering aspects are discussed, the emphasis is on the physical understanding of access protocols, from basic proposals to the latest innovations. Mathematical treatment is kept to a minimum, and most of the fundamental concepts are explained based on intuition and insights, supplemented by numerous illustrative figures. In addition, these concepts are expressed succinctly and concisely. Wherever possible, important references that make major contributions to the field are included for interested readers to investigate further. Latest updates and useful Web resources are posted at the book's Web site.

Summary: Review by Dr. Norman Abramson
Rating: 5
Posted by the author - Benny Bing. Review by Dr. Norman Abramson, inventor of the first random access protocol - the ALOHA protocol. There are three key technologies that are important in the design of efficient digital communication networks - communication channel theory, traffic analysis and transformation, and multiple access protocols. The first of these technologies, communication channel theory, dealing with questions of modulation, signal detection and error control coding is the oldest and best developed. Traffic analysis and transformation, dealing with questions of data compression, protocol spoofing and caching is perhaps the least developed although the first major results in this area are almost as old as those of communication channel theory. The third of these key technologies, multiple access protocols, dealing with the sharing of a common communication channel by a group of users has assumed a greater importance during the past two decades with the advent of shared cellular networks, packet radio networks and satellite networks. The analysis and design of these multiple access protocols in a variety of application areas is the topic of this well organized, comprehensive yet compact book. Bing defines the scope of the multiple access problem, describes many of the different approaches taken to solve the multiple access problem and analyzes the various approaches to their solution. Both fixed allocation strategies such as FDMA and TDMA as well as random access strategies based on a variety of ALOHA channels are treated. Since important differences in multiple access protocols define competing approaches in the network marketplace at the beginning of the third millennium this volume is well timed to help us evaluate different multiple access choices in network design. Dr. Norman Abramson ALOHA Networks, San Francisco, July, 2000

Publisher:   Springer
Number Of Pages:   152
Publication Date:   1997-09-30
ISBN-10 / ASIN:   0792399986
ISBN-13 / EAN:   9780792399988
Binding:   Hardcover
Product Description:

Many emerging technologies such as video conferencing, video-on-demand, and digital libraries require the efficient delivery of compressed video streams. For applications that require the delivery of compressed stored multimedia streams, the a priori knowledge available about these compressed streams can aid in the allocation of server and network resources. By using a client-side buffer, the resource requirements from the server and network can be minimized.
Buffering Techniques for Delivery of Compressed Video in Video-on-Demand Systems presents a comprehensive description of buffering techniques for the delivery of compressed, prerecorded multimedia data. While these techniques can be applied to any compressed data streams, this book focusses primarily on the delivery of video streams because of the large resource requirements that they can consume. The book first describes buffering techniques for the continuous playback of stored video sources. In particular, several bandwidth smoothing (or buffering) algorithms that are provably optimal under certain conditions are presented. To provide a well-rounded discussion, the book then describes extensions that aid in the ability to provide interactive delivery of video across networks. Specifically, reservation techniques that take into account interactive functions such as fast-forward and rewind are described. In addition, extensions to the bandwidth smoothing algorithms presented in the first few chapters are described. These algorithms are designed with interactive, continuous playback of stored video in mind and are also provably optimal under certain constraints.
Buffering Techniques for Delivery of Compressed Video in Video-on-Demand Systems serves as an excellent resource for multimedia systems, networking and video-on-demand designers, and may be used as a text for advanced courses on the topic.

Summary: WELL WRITTEN, BAD DISPLAYS THAT HURT THE BOOKS USEFULNESS
Rating: 3
THE BOOK IS VERY WELL WRITTEN, BUT OVER HALF THE BOOK DESCRIBES THE EFFECTS OF COLORS AND ALL THE DISPLAYS ARE B & W, AND USELESS. THE WEBSITE THAT YOU ARE REFERED TO DOES NOT YET HAVE MOST OF THE DISPLAYS. BUT I DONT GENERALLY READ A BOOK SITTING IN FRONT OF MY COMPUTER ANYWAY. A BOOK ON COLOR THEORY SHOULD BE IN COLOR EVEN IF THE COST IS MORE. HOWEVER I DO BELIEVE THE WRITTEN TEXT IS USEFULL AND EASY TO READ. WITH COLOR IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A GREAT REFERENCE.

Publisher:   Springer
Number Of Pages:   128
Publication Date:   2001-11-01
ISBN-10 / ASIN:   0792376161
ISBN-13 / EAN:   9780792376163
Binding:   Hardcover
Product Description:

Doppler Applications in LEO Satellite Communication Systems develops and presents an important class of techniques useful in the construction of little Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communication systems. It centers on the very significant Doppler shift that attends communications through a LEO satellite and shows how this phenomenon can be exploited for an unexpected benefit. The techniques taught in the book are expected to be particularly attractive to system engineers because ground-based transceivers must generally compensate for the large Doppler component and therefore the necessary receiver processing loops are often already in place and expensed.
This volume starts with a recounting of the characteristics of a LEO satellite and its orbit. The 2nd chapter addresses the LEO orbital geometry and reviews the Doppler effect attending LEO communications. Chapter three is focused on the important task of estimating the Doppler at a ground terminal. Appropriate signal processing algorithms are reviewed. Chapter four is concerned with predicting LEO satellite visibility. Chapters five and six are, respectively, devoted to the use of the significant LEO Doppler as an aid in a new traffic flow control protocol and as an aid for effecting communications power control. The last chapter describes MATLAB® based analysis and demonstration CD-Rom software that accompanies the book. The software is, first, a collection of functions useful for calculating satellite orbits, terrestrial contours and regions, and coordinate transformations based on Earth rotation. They are functions that have proven fundamental to the analysis of the traffic flow control protocol described in the book. Second, the software includes a set of user-friendly graphical animation routines that aid in visualization of a LEO orbit, its coverage regions, and the protocol.
Doppler Applications in LEO Satellite Communication Systems provides a thorough review of the LEO Doppler phenomenon and, together with included CD-Rom software, provides the know-how and show-how to harvest the benefits of this unexpectedly useful feature.

Product Description:
Fundamentals of Codes, Graphs, and Iterative Decoding contains need-to-know information for both professionals and academicians working in the field of communications.
Fifty years of learning how to design good codes can now be reduced to a single sentence: Good codes have a high degree of local connectivity, but must have simple structural descriptions to facilitate iterative decoding.
Fundamentals of Codes, Graphs, and Iterative Decoding is an explanation of how to introduce local connectivity, and how to exploit simple structural descriptions. Chapter 1 provides an overview of Shannon theory and the basic tools of complexity theory, communication theory, and bounds on code construction. Chapters 2 - 4 provide an overview of "classical" error control coding, with an introduction to abstract algebra, and block and convolutional codes. Chapters 5 - 9 then proceed to systematically develop the key research results of the 1990s and early 2000s with an introduction to graph theory, followed by chapters on algorithms on graphs, turbo error control, low density parity check codes, and low density generator codes.
Fundamentals of Codes, Graphs, and Iterative Decoding is intended as a synthesis of recent research results with a recognition of where these results fit into the bigger picture of error control coding.
Containing hundreds of theorems, proofs, and definitions, Fundamentals of Codes, Graphs, and Iterative Decoding is suitable for a graduate-level course in communications, as well as for a professional reference.

Summary: Excellent book to learn the latest coding techniques!
Rating: 5
This book has the latest information on coding techniques that include turbo codes and low density parity check codes. The Cornell team of Wicker and Kim have done a nice job of putting together the latest developments in the field of coding theory into a manageably-sized book. The book covers the traditional block and convolutional coding techniques as well briefly. The book seems to have focused more on the theoretical side of coding theory with lots of theorems and (fast) proofs. Overall, I found this book very well-written.

Product Description:
Multi-carrier technologies have emerged as important instruments in telecommunications. OFDM is in the forefront, with its adoption by the IEEE 802.11 standards committee and the European HYPERLAN standards group. Following OFDM, MC-CDMA is also demonstrating considerable promise when compared to competing technologies. According to the authors, these technologies are just the beginning in the coming multi-carrier revolution.
In Multi-Carrier Technologies for Wireless Communication, the authors explain how a common multi-carrier platform is being designed for DS-CDMA, TDMA, OFDM and MC-CDMA systems. Findings are presented which show how this multi-carrier platform enhances network capacity and probability of error performance.Specific results include (1) innovation in multi-carrier technologies that are enabling them to become an integral part of TDMA and DS-CDMA systems; and (2) the design of multi-carrier systems to overcome PAPR problems (in, e.g., OFDM).
Multi-Carrier Technologies for Wireless Communication is an important book for engineers who work with DS-CDMA, TDMA, OFDM, or MC-CDMA systems, and are seeking new ways of exploiting the wireless medium based on a "smarter" signal processing.

Product Description:
With rapid increase of mobile users of laptop computers and cellular phones, support of Internet services like e-mail and World Wide Web (WWW) access in a mobile environment is an indispensable requirement. The wireless networks must have the ability to provide real-time bursty traffic (such as voice or video) and data traffic in a multimedia environment with high quality of service. To satisfy the huge demand for wireless multimedia service, efficient channel access methods must be devised. For design and tuning of the channel access methods, the system performance must be mathematically analysed. To do so, very accurate models, that faithfully reproduce the stochastic behaviour of multimedia wireless communication and computer networks, must be constructed.
There exist several books on the performance analysis and evaluation for data communication networks or computer networks. This book attempts to present exact and approximate analytical solution methods and techniques using queueing theory in the complex multimedia traffic systems with procedures of random multiple access schemes. In particular, this book presents how to approximate the system performance of discrete-time multimedia networks, the probability distribution of the interarrival time of internetwork packets at the adjacent network and the higher moments of the transmission departure distribution and delay in wireless multimedia communication environment. In general the modeling of discrete-time multimedia communication systems are more complex than that of continuous-time systems because multiple state changes can occur from one time-unit to the next. This complicates the analysis of the model. This book also discusses numerical results that illustrate the applications of the theory and various properties.
Performance Analysis of Multichannel and Multi-Traffic on Wireless Communication Networks should prove useful to a post-graduate course in computer science or electrical engineering. It can be a pre requisite to some other more advanced courses like network design and management or queueing theory with applications to multimedia communication and computer networks. It can also be used for a course on stochastic models in applied mathematics and operations research departments.

Product Description:
Due to the explosive global growth in the number of mobile subscribers, as well as the growth predicted in the mobile data segment, the need for improved spectrum efficiency on the radio interface becomes more and more important. Frequency hopping (FH) is an effective method for improving the spectrum efficiency. One of the advantages of FH is that it can be combined with other spectral efficiency improving features like power control, handover and reuse partitioning.
Performance Enhancements in a Frequency Hopping GSM Network covers FH and some of the additional features in detail. It begins with an in-depth description of the basic concept of FH on link level as well as on system level. Different methods have been used for analysis, such as link level simulations, network level simulations and classic tele-traffic theory.
Special features of Performance Enhancements in a Frequency Hopping GSM Network:

Combines the practical experiences of operator and vendor with more theoretical research methods. An in-depth treatment of prevailing problems in GSM networks;
Presentation of a new method, computer-aided network design (CAND), which has been developed to analyse the complex network structures of a GSM network. CAND provides the possibility for more realistic performance evaluations than conventional methods;
Provides GSM-specific analysis of functionality improvements in power control, discontinuous transmission, and several handover algorithms;
Explanation of the quality and capacity gains of features like the combination of FH and reuse partitioning, referred to as intelligent frequency hopping;
A frequency planning method for FH GSM networks is presented. This method exploits the benefits from FH directly in the allocation process, increasing the overall frequency plan.
Product Description:
Useful as a text as well as a reference, this is one of the first books of its kind to combine basic and advanced topics of radiowave propagation and smart antennas into a single volume. The book is interdisciplinary in nature and contains material drawn from the electromagnetics and communications areas. Physical phenomena leading to the modeling and prediction of path loss, and characterizing the small-scale and medium-scale fluctuations of the received signal, are treated in detail. Several new path loss models are included. Both narrowband and wideband radio channel characterizations are discussed. Statistical descriptions of geometrically based single bounce scattering models that are useful in developing spatial channel models for smart arrays are presented. Principles of diversity and smart antennas for reducing fading and co-channel interference are presented. Performance evaluation of these arrays in the presence of fading and shadowing is treated. Both TDMA and CMDA systems are considered. Effects of element mutual coupling and correlation in limiting the system performance are elaborated. Finally, principles of multiple-input multiple-output communication systems that are increasingly becoming attractive owing to their enormous bit rate capabilities are covered.
Several practical examples are worked out throughout the text. Additional problems that help the reader assimilate the material and advance to higher-level topics are included at the end of each chapter. Radiowave Propagation and Smart Antennas for Wireless Communications has been written for use in a graduate course on communications and represents a comprehensive reference for research scientists and practitioners working in fields related to the topic.

In recent years, tremendous research has been devoted to the design of database systems for real-time applications, called real-time database systems (RTDBS), where transactions are associated with deadlines on their completion times, and some of the data objects in the database are associated with temporal constraints on their validity. Examples of important applications of RTDBS include stock trading systems, navigation systems and computer integrated manufacturing.
Different transaction scheduling algorithms and concurrency control protocols have been proposed to satisfy transaction timing data temporal constraints. Other design issues important to the performance of a RTDBS are buffer management, index accesses and I/O scheduling.
Real-Time Database Systems: Architecture and Techniques summarizes important research results in this area, and serves as an excellent reference for practitioners, researchers and educators of real-time systems and database systems.

Product Description:
The tendency towards more mobility and flexibility favors wireless networks for future broadband services, especially in local area and residential networks. Two major challenges in developing such high data-rate wireless networks are the channel distortion caused by multipath propagation and the limitations on bandwidth usage. In this book, novel transmission techniques are proposed that achieve multi-path mitigation, through orthogonal frequency-domain processing, in combination with a high bandwidth efficiency, through space division multiple access (SDMA). By exploiting the parallelism in the data-model and the frequency-selectivity of the propagation channel, high-performance non-linear detection algorithms with modest complexity requirements are obtained. In addition to discussing these core detection algorithms, this book pays special attention to the real-world problems encountered when integrating these into a complete system. Most notably, an optimal multi-user channel estimator and a combined pre- and post-synchronization approach are presented. Furthermore, complexity reduction is a recurring theme throughout the book. It has been addressed on several levels in the system design and encompasses network architecture, algorithmic and implementation architecture optimizations. Finally, an extended version of the recently finalized HIPERLAN-II standard is presented, which demonstrates the applicability of the proposed techniques and assesses their joint performance.
Space Division Multiple Access for Wireless Local Area Networks is appropriate for practitioners and researchers in the mobile communications and wireless fields.
